Appeared isn't the same as mattered

๐Ÿ“‹ Google's new AI report shows impressions only, no clicks, no conversions. Knowing you appeared tells you nothing about whether it worked, Meta scaling goes beyond increasing budget, and more!

๐Ÿ“‹ Google's new AI report tells you if you appeared. not whether it mattered.

Google's generative AI performance report inside Search Console rolled out to every website worldwide on August 31, giving site owners their first dedicated view of impressions inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover.

The report is genuinely useful for what it does, and what it does is narrower than it might first appear: it shows impressions, pages, countries, and devices. It does not show clicks, click-through rate, or conversions. A team celebrating a strong impression count in this report has confirmed the brand showed up. It hasn't confirmed that showing up did anything.

That gap matters because impressions and outcomes have historically moved together closely enough that teams got comfortable treating one as a decent proxy for the other.

AI-surfaced impressions break that assumption more than traditional search results ever did, since a user reading a synthesized AI answer may never click through to the source at all, making an impression count here potentially the least action-oriented traffic signal in a team's entire reporting stack.

Treat the new impression data as a presence signal, not a performance signal

The report answers "did my content appear," which is a real and previously unavailable data point. It doesn't answer "did that appearance drive anything," the question most stakeholders actually care about when they ask how AI visibility is going.

Report the new GSC data explicitly as presence, paired with whatever downstream signal you do have, branded search lift, direct traffic trends, self-reported attribution, rather than letting a rising impression count stand in for business impact on its own.

Tracking that alongside proxy signals for actual business impact across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode, not just the impressions Search Console shows for Google's own surfaces, is what Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is built to surface.

Decide deliberately on the publisher opt-out toggle rather than defaulting into it

Search Console now includes a control letting site owners opt out of appearing in these generative AI features entirely, and that's a real decision with tradeoffs in both directions, not something to leave on whatever the default happens to be.

Confirm your current opt-out setting and make sure it reflects an actual decision your team made, rather than whatever configuration existed before this control was introduced. Opting out trades away AI visibility entirely. Staying in without measuring outcomes means investing in a channel you can't yet prove is working.

Build the outcome measurement this report doesn't provide

The report's own limitation, impressions without clicks or conversions, is exactly the layer worth building separately rather than waiting for Google to add it. You can try it free for 7 days.

A brand can appear constantly in AI answers and still not know if any of it is worth the effort. This report finally shows the appearing. The worth is still on you to measure.

Together with Levanta

The biggest holiday mistake brands make? Trying to build a creator program in November.

The strongest holiday programs are built over the 90 days leading up to peak shopping season. That is when brands recruit the right partners, test incentives, and build enough momentum to scale when demand arrives.

Trusted by 3,000+ eCommerce brands, Levanta created The 90-Day Holiday Sprint, a free step-by-step playbook to:

  • Recruit and activate creators before their holiday calendars fill
  • Build competitive commission structures without sacrificing margin
  • Use Day 30, 60, and 90 checkpoints to create a program ready to scale for BFCM

Donโ€™t wait until November to build the creator program you will wish you already had. Your 90-day countdown starts now.

โšก Meta scaling goes beyond increasing budget

This framework breaks Meta scaling into three approaches: vertical scaling increases spend, horizontal scaling introduces new messaging angles, and diagonal scaling takes proven messages into different creative formats.

Why it works: New motivations and formats can expand creative diversity instead of forcing more budget through the same winners. This gives Meta additional ways to reach buyers while reducing dependence on a handful of fatigued ads.

Where it needs balance: Higher frequency doesn't automatically mean an audience is exhausted, and different angles or formats can still reach overlapping users. Scaling decisions should ultimately follow incremental conversions, CPA, and profitability rather than frequency or creative diversity alone.

๐ŸŽฅ Reel of the Day

What Works:

1. Billboard Becomes Content - Instead of treating the billboard as static outdoor media, the brand turns it into the Reel itself. The changing poses create movement, curiosity and a reason to keep watching.

2. Scale Creates Spectacle - The oversized model and fragrance jar dominate a busy New York streetscape, making the product feel culturally significant. Real pedestrians and yellow taxis amplify the billboardโ€™s scale and premium presence.

3. Physical-Digital Payoff - The final shot brings the real fragrance jar into the foreground while its giant billboard version remains behind it. That perspective match creates a satisfying reveal and connects spectacle directly to product.

Turn static OOH creative into a sequence where the subject changes poses while the product stays anchored, then finish by matching the physical product against its billboard counterpart.
