Too many collection pages hurt

🗂️ What a site with 180,000 URLs and four indexed pages teaches large catalogs

Google crawled one website 1.17 million times over several weeks and indexed four of its pages.

Google's John Mueller discussed the case on Bluesky on October 6. The product aggregator site had 180,000 URLs. The homepage wasn't among the four indexed. Mueller also noted that many indexed URLs redirected to the homepage, and said auto-generated aggregator content makes it hard to convince search engines of a site's value.

Even a well-run store can build the same pattern through its filters.

How filters multiply

Twelve colors, eight sizes and 30 categories make 2,880 combinations. Add sort orders and pagination, and a 600-product store can expose tens of thousands of URLs.

Each one asks Google for crawl time. Most offer nothing a parent category doesn't.

Run your own numbers

Open the Page indexing report in Search Console and note three counts:

  • Indexed pages
  • "Crawled, currently not indexed"
  • "Discovered, currently not indexed"

If the two not-indexed counts together are more than five times your indexed count, crawl budget is likely going to the wrong pages. That ratio is my judgment.

Then open Crawl stats and check which URL patterns Googlebot requests most. Parameters like sort, view and page often dominate.

Sort every filter page into one of three groups

Earn a place. Combinations people actually search, such as "women's black wool coat." Give each a clean URL, a unique title, a short intro and links from the parent category.

Serve shoppers only. Combinations useful while browsing but with no search demand. Point their canonical tag at the parent category, or add noindex.

Don't block a page in robots.txt and expect noindex to work too. Google can't see a noindex tag on a page it isn't allowed to crawl.

Stop generating. Combinations with zero to two products. Remove the links that create them. Pages already live can return a 404.

Avoid the homepage redirect

When retiring filter pages, don't redirect them all to the homepage, which is the pattern Mueller flagged. Redirect to the closest category, or let them return a 404.

Before Black Friday

Keep one permanent URL for your Black Friday collection and reuse it every year, instead of creating a new dated page each season. Its links and history build up over time.

Track the fix

Check the Page indexing counts monthly. The not-indexed total should fall while indexed pages and organic clicks hold or rise.

Three numbers to pull today

Open Page indexing and write down the three numbers. If the ratio is badly off, filters are the first place to look.

⚡Amazon ranking depends on sales momentum and conversion

This framework argues that strong Amazon rankings come from generating consistent unit sales while maintaining a competitive listing. Advertising and deals can accelerate early momentum, helping products gain visibility and potentially increase organic sales.

Why it works: Higher sales velocity and strong conversion performance can support better visibility. As organic sales grow, brands may become less dependent on paid traffic, improving overall acquisition efficiency and TACoS.

Where it needs balance: Amazon's Best Sellers Rank primarily reflects sales performance, while organic keyword rankings involve additional relevance and performance signals. Aggressive promotions don't guarantee lasting rankings, and profitability depends on margins, advertising costs, and sustained demand after discounts end.

🎥 Reel of the Day

What Works:

1. Humor Creates The Hook - The reel opens with a playful confrontation about Enzo’s bad breath, turning an everyday pet care concern into an entertaining conversation that immediately captures attention.

2. Pet Reactions Drive Engagement - Enzo’s expressive face, tongue movements, and playful responses make the interaction entertaining. These unscripted-looking moments encourage viewers to watch longer and share the relatable exchange.

3. Demonstration Makes Benefits Tangible - Close-up shots of the container and dental powder show viewers exactly what the product looks like. The creator explains its intended benefits while positioning it as a convenient alternative.

Turn a common customer frustration into a humorous conversation featuring a relatable character. Build curiosity through their reactions, then introduce the product as a practical solution with a simple demonstration.
